Carla was first introduced to Pilates at the University of Leeds in England where she was on an exchange program through York University. Upon completion of her Fine Arts degree from York, Carla began her STOTT Pilates certification, completing the program in 1997. Working under Moira Merrithew, she began to teach STOTT Certification Programs in Toronto and abroad in 1998. As a Senior Instructor Trainer with STOTT from 1998 until 2010, Carla has taught in over 15 countries conducting workshops, courses and examinations.
In 2000-2003, Carla was co-founder and director of the San Francisco Bay Area STOTT Certification Centre where she established one of three STOTT certification programs within California and supervised the Pilates studio at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in the Bay Area. Her return to Toronto in 2003 provided her with the additional responsibility of teaching international courses to prospective STOTT Instructor Trainers who were invited to participate in the program by head office.
Her knowledge and understanding of the STOTT Pilates method established her as technical director for several series of STOTT Instructional videos and DVDs and has made her a sought after presenter at several national and international fitness conferences including FILEX (Australia), Can-Fit Pro (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, St. John’s), IDEA (New York, Miami), Body Mind Spirit Conference (California) and the International Health and Racquet Sports Association Conference.
As a committed instructor to both clients and instructors alike, Carla has furthered her own education in mind-body movement by completing and maintaining her Gyrotonic Level 1 Certification and continually participating in Pilates workshops and training. In 2011, Carla received her Master of Arts in Critical Disability Theory from York University. Her thesis focused on the possibilities of integrating a critical theoretical component into the education of Pilates practitioners. In 2015, Carla successfully completed her 200 hours Yoga Teacher Training under the supervision of Scott Davis and Pat Harada Linfoot in Toronto.
As owner of Studio3, Carla provides guidance and education to the studio staff as well as other instructors in the GTA and beyond. Her expertise and passion for the work has inspired her to create and conduct her own continuing education workshops that focus on providing instructors with programming choices that challenge and enhance their clients’, as well as their own, workouts.
With well over 20 years of experience, her understanding of movement education provides her clients and fellow instructors with the tools, awareness and diversity that are keys in their pursuit of a healthy, functional and pain-free body. And her enthusiasm for the work has allowed Carla the opportunity to establish a strongly committed clientele who are challenged by the constant diversity of the high caliber Pilates programming that she provides.
